140 Series Mail-In

$55.00

This is a varied category of Wurlitzer amplifiers associated with the 140/A/B/C as well as the tube amp 145. Some of these amps also appear in 700 series models. As such there’s a wide variety of parts, issues and modifications available. Therefore the scope and cost of service also varies quite a bit. So we’ve decided to change this service listings to a deposit listing in the hopes that it will streamline the service process AND provide as much info as possible regarding service and the mail-in process. So here is an overview and detailed FAQ about the mail-in process.

Overview:

Mail-in service is typically pretty straightforward. And the 140 series are pretty straightforward as well as they consist of 2 key sections which are both relatively easy to remove. There is the main amp which is affixed behind the action, and then the long cable harness and controls which will either be mounted on the lid or the cheek block. In the case of lid mounting, please remove them from the lid. In the case of the cheek block it’s generally best to remove the whole block. The cable assembly can be a source of great strife - so please take care in handling it. It can remain plugged into the main amp when possible. Once both sections are removed please package generously and include a note or tag indicating your name and contact info and/or this deposit for reference.

Once you have a label on you package please share the info with us if it isn’t done automatically. We will then put you on our incoming board. And then when the unit arrives we will let you know within a few days and likely have it on the bench for initial testing/service within 3-4 business days. Feel free to reach out to us to confirm arrival if you haven’t heard from us. We’re happy to check in any time during this process.

Service: Typically we’ll do any recommended preventative maintenance prior to trying to solve any specific issues. This is because sometimes this solves those issues and because it gives us a better platform in which to diagnose and fix issues. And perhaps more importantly it reduces future issues and ensures the issues we did fix stay fixed. Typically the goal with these amps is to service them with the intent of them being reliable for years to come. That ends up being the best value and the most reliable service in the long run.

Parts: We stock a LOT of related parts. Including many specialty parts which are very hard to find. But we don’t have absolutely everything, so sometimes we may need some extra time with an amp. This is pretty uncommon these days as our stock continues to grow, but we’ll let you know if a part is on order and we thank you in advance for the patience.

Lead time: Each week is different - but generally speaking we can turn around one of these 140 series amps in 5-10 business days.

Changes: The big one we recommend on the solid state 140 series is transitioning from the germanium power transistors to the silicon ones. We re-bias the power stage and the result is something that is more clear, stable and much less prone to future issues. The mojo, thankfully, makes it through this process intact. On the 145 tube series there is a wife variety of options, mainly around trying to get these buggers to be a bit less noisy. It’s a deep hole to dive down but we’re happy to discuss it and make recommendations.

Pricing: We’re proud to be one of the most reasonably priced shops that specializes in these amps. There’s a lot of reasons but mainly it’s because our overhead is low and we genuinely want to treat everyone as kindly as we can. We typically break down the bill into parts and labor and note the services provided. The shop rate is currently $70/hr and most of these amps can get done in 2-5hrs. We’re able to get a lot done in that amount of time due to great rework stations, experienced techs and parts on hand. If things look like they’ll be outside of the normal service window, we’ll talk it over with you first.

Payment: Once things are finished up, we’ll invoice - either through squarespace or paypal and detail the parts and labor used. This can be paid with a CC, paypal, venmo, apple pay etc. And will include return shipping cost as well. (Return shipping will usually be around $15-25 in the US) The deposit will be subtracted from the total on the invoice.

Hopefully this was a helpful overview, but as always, please let us know if you have any questions. Happy to help.
